Manchester City 1-1 Liverpool | De Bruyne misses a penalty as Liverpool hold Man City to draw

Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne missed a crucial penalty in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at the Etihad stadium.

The deadlock was broken in the 13th minute when Mo Salah scored from the spot after Kyle Walker tripped Sadie Mane in the box.

City, however equalized through Gabriel Jesus when he danced his way through the Liverpool defence and guided the ball past the on-rushing Allison from a De Bruyne pass.

A penalty was awarded to City for a handball by Joe Gomez just before the break but De Bruyne missed the target from 12 yard out.

De Bruyne’s spot-kick was the first in the Premier League to completely miss the target since October 2018, when Riyad Mahrez blazed over at Anfield.

The midfielder’s miss proved crucial as City missed out on what could have been a significant victory in the early weeks of the title race over Jurgen Klopp’s defending champions.

Gabriel Jesus also failed to put his team ahead when he glanced a header just wide of the post from an inviting Joao Cancelo cross.

It was City who looked the most likely to score for the rest of the game as they tried and failed to hit the back of the net.

Liverpool suffered a huge blow when Alexander-Arnold picked up an injury and was unable to continue with James Milner coming on to replace him.

The result leaves City in the bottom half of the table heading into the international break, with Liverpool five points ahead of their rivals and leaders Leicester a further point clear.

Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand on the teams in front of them, but this was an opportunity to close the gap and get high up the table.

City head to Tottenham to face Jose Mourinho’s men after the international break on November 21 whilst Liverpool host league leaders Leicester City on the same day.
